September Flavours

Welcome September & autumn vitamins!

The summer is ending and the heat wave has finally passed by. I love September - it's a fabulous month as the season changes and the air feels so fresh. The weather gets a little cooler but we will still be enjoying long sunny & warm days while the harvest is getting ready to be collected!

Italians are commited to eating local and seasonal flavours and it is seen to be important to buy what mother nature offers every month. The seasonal fruits and vegetables are not only healthier and full of valuable nutrients but they even cost less! I feel so spoiled when I pass by the fruit and vegetable stands at my local market in the morning. There are many sweet suprises when it comes to the selection of fruits and it looks like I will manage to combine a healthy and balanced diet for the coming change of the season!

What kind of fruits and vegetables do we eat in Italy in September? I have made a list of goodies you just have to have in your fridge! Lets try to cook and enjoy food in a more conscious way and announce the arrival of autumn!

Fruits:

figs

fichi d'india (prickly pear - the fruit from the cactus)

grapes

blueberries

plums

apples

pears

melons

peaches

Vegetables:

broccoli

cabbages

green beans

cucumber

eggplants

pumpkin

tomatoes

mushrooms

spinach

Squash
